Contemporary Worship

9:45 a.m.
The Upper Room, Education Building

First Presbyterian Church of Cartersville offers a service of worship at 9:45 on Sunday mornings that is more informal in style. The service is held in The Upper Room, a large, open, inviting space on the 2nd floor of the education building. While this service follows an order for worship (after all, we are Presbyterians!), it is more relaxed.

Seating for the service is in chairs (padded for comfort!). The ministers in this service are usually dressed casually (no robes, no ties). The prayers and the sermons are given from floor level amongst the people. While there is a podium, there is no pulpit. There is also a communion table present, and each Sunday the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper is celebrated.

The music in the service is led by a band of musicians that include 3-5 singers, keyboard, guitar, bass, violin and drums. Instead of singing from a hymnal, the words to songs are projected on a video screen. The music takes on a much more contemporary feel, even though from time to time we sing some of the “good old hymns” in this service as well.

Because of the state of the art equipment in this worship setting, the use of visual images and a variety of audio is employed in this service to communicate Christian truths.

The service occurs at the same time as Sunday school for children ages 3 and over. A nursery is available for younger children and infants.

While some men wear coats and ties and some women dresses, what you wear to the service does not matter. You will see people dressed up as well as dressed down. The disposition of the heart in worship is what matters.
